Phenol Peels are the strongest kind of chemical skin peels available and they are generally used on severely aged skin
characterised by deep wrinkles and significant skin laxity.
The procedure is a serious medical treatment and should not be entered into lightly and without a lot of thought and preparation.
Phenol Peels have been performed over many decades in the USA, France and more recently in many other European countries.
All deep peels in our clinic are performed by Dr Xavier, who has many years' experience in skin peels and who has attended a number of special training courses.
We use the Skintech brands of phenol peels that includes "Lip and Eyelid Formula" as well as a full face phenol peel preparation.
Dr Xavier has also attended a number of international deep peel training courses including those with world-renowned Dr Philippe Deprez
near Barcelona, Spain and Dr Jean-Luc Vigneron in Nice Saint Paul de Vence, France. He has also attended phenol peel seminars in Paris.
Results from Phenol Peels can be dramatic and rival, if not better, those achieved with facelift or facial surgery.
Phenol Peels can be used on the whole face or concentrated on the eyelid area or round the mouth.
They are particularly suited to the lines around the mouth that are often referred to a 'smoker's lines' or 'lipstick lines'.
Surgery often simply stretches thin, ageing skin to become even thinner but peels have the advantage that they can help to thicken the
skin and stimulate its lower layers to prevent premature visible skin-ageing and repair damage that has already occurred.
Peels encourage your own skin to produce collagen and elastin fibres, giving a fuller but natural look and help to improve your skin health.
In principle, the results of a phenol peel are permanent, but of course after the peel, the skin will continue to age, bringing about normal skin changes due
to ageing. Sensible care and protection of your skin will however help to perpetuate the benefits of the peel. Results are not immediate and it will take a
few months to judge the final result.
The condition of and damage to your skin today is as a result of years (often decades) of UV exposure (whether daily
unprotected general exposure, tanning in the sun or from sunbeds). This is what we are seeking to improve by carrying out this peel procedure.
In addition, other factors such as smoking and poor nutrition can affect the health and condition of your skin.
The sun (or actually any visible daylight) contains ultra-violet (UV) radiation. This is the primary cause of ageing of the skin.
Any chemical peeling procedure is designed to reduce and possibly reverse some of this skin-ageing. The deeper the peel, the more improvement can
generally be expected.
Don't forget that your skin is the largest organ in your body so like your heart, lungs and other important organs it needs looking after.
For good facial skin-health, the face should never be exposed to sun (or daylight) without UV protection, at any time of the year.
Even on cloudy
days, one should not go outdoors without some form of UV protection and one should not actively try to tan the face.
Remember 'tanning' cannot be and is not safe and always indicates damage to the skin, with alterations to
the DNA structure of your skin cells taking place. Over time, this ultimately leads to; a loss of elasticity due to a breaking-down of
collagen and elastin fibres (the skin's natural "scaffolding" support structures), wrinkles, pigmentation and possibly skin cancer
including malignant melanoma.
Using sunbeds to achieve a tan is completely against sensible medical advice because it delivers damaging UV radiation to your skin
and simply accelerates the above ageing and damage process. It is of course sensible - for so many reasons - NOT to smoke and, if you are
a smoker undergoing this peel procedure, now is perhaps a good time to stop.
Please remember that this peel is not a 'quick-fix' beauty procedure. It is a serious medical and invasive procedure and you are embarking on
a 'Treatment Journey' that will take time.
Your 'Treatment Journey' involves having consultations, visits to the clinic, and blood tests. The procedure itself is very technical and
involves a lot of preparation by you, the patient and the doctor.
Your Treatment Journey also involves important aftercare for a number of months. This is of course reflected in the price of this treatment
and you must decide and conclude that the benefits of undergoing the peel outweigh the risks, potential side-effects and, of
course, the cost.
During the process of determining your suitability for a Phenol Peel you will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire.
You must ensure that you complete it fully and disclose any and all relevant information about your past and current medical status -
including giving Dr Xavier a full list of any medication you are taking.
The cost of the peel does vary depending on the area(s) of the face being treated and the extent of the
ageing damage to the skin.
Prices range from £1800 for localised areas (lip or eyelid for example) to £4595 for the full face.
These prices include the pre-peel preparation products, botulinum toxin treatment to prevent excessive
upper facial movement while the skin heals, blood tests as well as the peel itself, clinic visits and
aftercare products you will need.
Full details about what is included will be explained to you during your consultation.
An interest-free (typical 0% APR) finance payment option is available for this treatment through an
independent patient finance company (subject to an application and status).
